Taunton Pet Stores was originally founded in 1967 by Roy and Betty Whitehead. Starting with outdoor market stalls in and around Tameside, they enlisted the help of their children and eventually grandchildren to help run the family business. Setting up a permanent stall in Hyde Market Hall, Betty and Roy, alongside their son David, ran the stall together until they both retired and David took over.
As the popularity of outdoor markets dwindled and competition from shops reduced footfall, the indoor market stall continued to serve regular and new customers in Hyde six days a week all year round, making it one of the best pet shops in Manchester.
David retired in 2025, and the stall is now run and owned by his daughter Hayley and her partner Terry, with the help of their children Callum, Daisy, and occasional visits from toddler Skye. It continues to be a popular family-run business at the heart of Hyde, where you can find a wide range of pet supplies in Manchester.
